Historical Heritage

The history of India goes back five thousand years and the earliest form of civilizations has been discovered in Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro, now mostly in Pakistan with some parts in Gujarat, Rajasthan, & Haryana¬† ¬†in India. In subsequent eras, the Mauryas, Guptas, Kushanas and later the Mughals and the Rajputs ruled India in phases. Indian history has been chequered since ancient period to her Independence in 1947. Ancient India - Ancient Indian history could be traced back to Indus Valley Civilization, the remains of which have been excavated in Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro now mostly in Pakistan. In India, archaeological sites have been excavated in Dholavira & Lothal in Gujarat, and Kalibangan in Rajasthan.

The next illustrious phase in Indian history is the foundation and growth of the Mauryan dynasty. Founded by Chandragupta Maurya in Magadha (present day Bihar) in 3rd century BC, this dynasty reached its zenith during the rule of Ashoka the Great. The transformation of King Ashoka from a treacherous to benign ruler is a much talked about subject in Indian history. Ashoka erected columns with inscriptions throughout his territory. These columns are still seen in Sarnath in Uttar Pradesh, Bhubaneswar in Orissa and other places. Four headed lion, the emblem of Republic of India was the creation of Ashoka, and the original sculpture is preserved in Sarnath.

You could find archaeological and architectural remains of ancient Indian dynasties in Sanchi in Madhya Pradesh, Sarnath in Uttar Pradesh, Gaya and Rajgriha in Bihar.

Medieval India - History of medieval India are underlined by the Mughals and the Rajputs. Both these dynasties excelled in warfare, architecture, and art. Mughal dominance is prevalent throughout northern India. Red Fort and Jama Masjid in Delhi, Agra Fort and Taj Mahal in Agra, and Fatehpur Sikri in Uttar Pradesh are brilliant representations of Mughal architecture. However the most outstanding among these is the Taj Mahal, a mausoleum in marble built by Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz.

The grandeur of Rajputana are aptly represented in their magnificent palaces and forts built across Rajasthan. Amber fort, Junagarh fort, Mehrangarh fort, Jaigarh fort, Chittaurgarh fort, and Jaisalmer fort are formidable. The palaces belonging to royal Rajput families attract tourists in thousands every year. Many of them have been converted into heritage hotels. Religious Heritage
